Determinants of consumers’ acceptance of indigenous leafy vegetables in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa

Abstract Indigenous leafy vegetables (ILVs) do not only play a significant role in ensuring livelihoods for households South Africa but can also contribute enhancing the consumption of diversified foods improved micronutrient intake. However, these plants are underutilized and their is determined by ILVs' regional cuisines accepted certain ethnic groups. This study was set out to assess acceptance indigenous consumers Limpopo Mpumalanga provinces. The used secondary data that were collected African Vulnerability Assessment Committee 2016. A total 1520 respondents selected from two provinces using multistage stratified sampling method. results descriptive statistics showed blackjack least consumed vegetable as compared amaranth cleome, which were, respectively, most consumed. Seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) model employed analyse determinants consumers’ ILVs. SUR gender household head, marital status, HIV wages/salary, grants statistically influencing ILVs consumers. Education status had negative influence on all being investigated this study. Policy makers need consider inclusion into school curriculum national food nutrition security policy.
